The biggest pain in the ass is re-installing all of the Windows updates ( if you have the original Win95 release) and reloading any hardware drivers that you have installed yourself (Windows will install whatever it has on file, which in my case is a year and a half old).

Sometimes it can be solved by removing and/or re-installing the offending program or hardware drivers, but you have to have an idea where to start. Try to get a handle on any changes you made to your system prior to the errors starting in the first place. Did you install/uninstall any "not-too-well-known" programs?

You have to keep in mind that with the HAL system, i can, at any time re install all files, and wipe the hard drive clean. The problem this week was You could always run the adapter at 16 colors I suppose but you'll have to be on-line to get all the IBM hardware drivers, that is, if you can find them at all.

Reinstalling Windows will not require reinstalling your apps also. You may need to reinstall some hardware drivers - usually video drivers need to be redone. This should be a fairly smooth process. Alternative alternative - most Linux implementations are better at detecting hardware - if you have plenty of time, you could install one of these (mainly available free on PC magazine cover-disks) and make a note of the hardware, then pick up relevent drivers before re-installing Windows. regards, DaveJ.

When you swapped the hardware did you rerun Win95 setup? A lot of times you can get away with swapping hardware and not have to rerun setup. But if you don't, hardware.
